Today, the world is in mourning after the news that Louis Vuitton’s artistic director and the founder of globally-adored fashion brand Off-White Virgil Abloh has sadly passed away following a two-year battle with cancer, aged just 41 years old.
An undeniably dominant cultural figure, Abloh continuously broke barriers throughout his career and meticulously brought the arts & fashion together in a way nobody else could.
Founder of one of the most widely-represented fashion houses on the planet, Virgil’s Off-White brand has long been a leading high-couture imprint.
Following a gruelling battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma, Virgil sadly passed away on Sunday 28th November 2021 – leaving behind his wife Shannon and two children, Lowe & Grey.
In the wake of his death, tributes have continued to pour in, with many people sharing their love for Virgil.
Louis Vuitton’s chief executive Bernard Arnault said: “Virgil was not only a genius designer, a visionary, he was also a man with a beautiful soul and great wisdom.
A statement on his own Instagram page described Virgil as a: “fiercely devoted father, husband, son, brother, and friend,” adding: “he chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.”
More recently, Abloh’s presence has been felt increasingly in the electronic music world. A celebrated electronic artist, Virgil has played at venues and festivals including Tomorrowland, Hï Ibiza, fabric, Circoloco and more.
Virgil also found a way to combine his love for engineering and architecture with music in a way that only he could, collaborating several times with Pioneer DJ to launch a transparent model of Pioneer’s CDJ-2000NXS2 and DJM-900NXS2, displayed at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as the distinct and super-limited edition controller, the DDJ-1000-OW.
As the world grieves the loss of a cultural icon, we look at some of the beautiful outpourings from the electronic music community – hitting home just how loved and iconic Virgil was:
