Okain lands on LOCUS with a dubby 4-tracker - 'Daddy's Groove'

LOCUS has continued an impressive string of top-level releases, dropping a delightfully dubby 4-tracker from the French electronic music hot property Okain.

Okain is part of the new wave of artists bursting through on the well respected French underground house scene and is widely known for shaping the sound in his homeland.

Daddy’s Groove EP is a wonderfully contrasting 4-tracker, brimming with infectious hooks, layered over his trademark dubby basslines.

The EP kicks off with a dark affair named ‘Midnight Feed’. Almost haunting in its offering, the dubby and dark undertones produce an elegant roller whilst continuing the layering masterclass with yet more cleverly placed vocal and synth samples.

The catchy-named ‘Tavie One Tooth’ rolls in next. An old skool vibe works through the tracks patterns with a piano-based synth that adds the extra tempo, elevating it to a peak time stomper level. This track hones in on rich M1 stabs to showcase a bubbling house beat. The break in the track twists the contrast and adds a deeper dimension before bringing the production together in a super-infectious closing pattern drive.

On the flip, enter ‘Brother Jack’. A masterclass in production layering forms the base of a track that floats seamlessly into a ‘dream-like’ state of consciousness. Airy pads and jazzy interludes a-plenty. This one is a slightly slower tempo than the rest of the EP. Brother Jack is one for the set-starters looking to build a tone.

‘Green Mousse’ closes out the release with a punchy bassline and intricate synth sound samples before an incredibly infectious bubble-like hook works its magic. The track works through its paces and is accompanied by a simple, yet highly effective vocal snippet. Green Mousse then flips the early questions to rework the original thought-provoking tease. A well-respected climax to the EP.

Overall, there is a track for all set times in here. Stacked full of wonderfully mastered sonics and that trademark Okain sound we have come to expect.

Daddy’s Groove is OUT NOW on LOCUS.
