A favourite amongst the Solid Grooves camp with recent releases on The Martinez Brothers’ Cuttin’ Headz and Paco Osuna’s Mindshake, LATEMORNING boss Blackchild is in high demand across the globe.

After appearing for the NYC imprint’s sold-out label night at the end of March, he recently made a big debut outing on Revival New York with the trippy sounds of his new single ‘Desire.’ You can buy/stream it via https://snd.click/RNY032.

To celebrate the release of his latest record, we caught up with Blackchild for a telling Mr. Afterparty interview special:

Congratulations on releasing your latest EP, ‘Desire,’ on Revival New York. Is there any specific influence or experiences that fuelled the inspiration behind the tracks?

This song has my typical groove with some influences from the old-school techno scene and some hypnotising vocals typical of the beginning of the 2000s.

How long has this release been in the pipeline with Revival New York, and what has your experience been like working with the label?

I remember I played ‘Desire’ at Creamfields in Manchester as the closing track, and the reaction was insane. I spoke to Mike the day after, and he asked about the track ID, and when I told him that it was my track, he immediately asked me to put it on Revival, and I was like, “Yeah, let’s do it”. He and the team did an amazing job of pushing the song in the right way and to the right channels; it’s one of the best work experiences I had with a label.

You’re also the label boss of LATEMORNING. What inspired you to start your record label, and what unique characteristics do the releases have?

I started LATEMORNING in 2020 to release my own music without waiting for ages for the big labels to reply, and it worked very well from the first release. Whenever I have a track ready that, in my opinion, doesn’t fit another label or one that is unique, I release it via LATEMORNING.

How do you balance your responsibilities as a label boss with your work as a producer and DJ?

I plan all the releases at least two to three months before, so it’s pretty easy for me to put a LATEMORNING track in my schedule whenever I have a free space. I have more than 200 unreleased tracks ready, and I keep making music every day, so when you make music, you don’t have to worry about any balance 😉 Also, LATEMORNING is a very low-profile label, with no social media and just small promo …

What has been the most challenging part of running your label, and how have you overcome those challenges?

I think the most challenging part will come now that I’m starting to work on my new label NAIMA, which will also be open to the other producers and not only to me as LATEMORNING. The label will be based on jazz and groovy beats typical of my music, too… classy vibes! And the aim is to bring it to the next level by doing some NAIMA shows worldwide as well! This project is definitely going to be the biggest challenge that I have for the next few years!

You’ve played at some of the biggest clubs and festivals in the world. Is there a particular venue or event that is a favourite for you?

I always say the next one will be the best, haha. But earlier this year, I played Cocoricó. It is like the temple of electronic music in Italy, and honestly, that was the dream gig when I started this job. Also, the residencies at DC10 and HÏ are special, and I’m literally living the dream.

How has your sound evolved over the years, and where do you see it going?

My sound is evolving day by day. I always focus on listening to new music, new styles, and new influences. I also get good vibes from the places I visit every week to capture the most from the emotions I feel from them and the crowds I meet every weekend. I would call this moment of my music and career ‘back to my roots’ as my sound is going back towards funk and jazz – those were the sounds that influenced me initially.

What do you think sets your music apart from other producers?

Everyone is different in their own way! We have to make people dance, and this is my only belief! I like to see people enjoying and dancing when I play music. That is the only goal I have. Many DJs just put on the music they like the most without understanding the crowds… and that, in my small experience, is a mistake.

What advice would you give to up-and-coming producers and DJs looking to break into the industry?

The advice I can give to up-and-comers is to believe in yourself and keep working day and night 24/7 on your goal! The music industry is so full and saturated, so if you want to have your light, you have to be unique and work on every side: music, your social media, your brand/look etc.

Finally, what’s next for Blackchild and LATEMORNING? Any upcoming projects or releases we should be on the lookout for?

Stay tuned! I won’t spoil anything, but keep your eyes out for my new label NAIMA soon…
