Inside Five: Maritime Yacht Club

Maritime Yacht Club is the creative brainchild of renowned UK tastemaker artist/Origins Rcrds label boss Josh Butler alongside longtime friend, talented singer/songwriter and fellow producer José Rosa – who co-wrote and provided the vocals for Josh’s iconic hit record ‘Got A Feeling’.

After more than a year in the making, 2023 launched this collaborative project, which has more to it than meets the eye. Think sultry, vocal-led, commercially-tinged dance cuts with shards of deep house, breaks, jazz, electro and much more. 

Stepping into summer with the fourth release under Josh and José Maritime Yacht Club moniker, the duo have delivered another high-quality single from their forthcoming album. Backing up impressive offerings ‘On My Own’, ‘Change’ and ‘Floating On A Star’, Josh and José are on hand with another invigorating vocal-led deep house cut, blending punchy grooves, vivid piano lines, rich guitar riffs and another stunning vocal arrangement from José. 

To mark their latest release, we caught up with Maritime Yacht Club as they join us for a telling Inside Five feature: 

What can you tell us about your latest release?

‘I’ll Be There’ is an emotional track that explores the depths of support and being a source of strength in challenging times. We wanted it to capture emotions while infusing a danceable quality. We aimed to create a deeply personal connection with listeners.

Maritime Yacht Club tracks fundamentally differ from the sound you’re both typically known for. What drew you to experiment with something different, and how did you end up with the final sound style?

As artists, we constantly seek new avenues of creative expression. While our individual backgrounds might have showcased different genres, we wanted to collaborate and explore a fresh sound together. We were drawn to the idea of blending elements of electronic music, pop, and live instruments creating a fusion that’s both nostalgic and contemporary. We found a balance that resonated with us.

You’re four releases deep into the forthcoming album. What can people expect from the rest of what’s to come?

Expect a mix of energetic and uplifting tracks as well as atmospheric. Each track offers a unique perspective, but they all come together to form a cohesive narrative that we can’t wait to share.

There are plenty of instruments that feature in your productions. What does a typical creative session look/sound like in the Maritime Yacht Club studio?

Our creative sessions are collaborative and dynamic. We love experimenting with different instruments and sounds. It often starts with one of us bringing an idea or melody to the table, and then we build upon it together. You’ll find us surrounded by guitars, synthesizers, drums, and various other instruments, exploring different chord progressions, melodies, and rhythms until we find a combination of sounds that works.

Lastly, are there any more exciting things in the pipeline or other projects you’d like to share with our audience?

We’re incredibly busy with our upcoming releases, and we’re thrilled to announce fantastic collaborations with amazingly talented artists. We have some great projects confirmed outside of the album, which we are really excited about.
