Inside Five: Gray Cosmo

The duo are set to follow up their debut EP with an electrifying release on Sian’s Octopus Recordings imprint.

Inside Five: Gray Cosmo

Elusive electronic duo Gray Cosmo find themselves alone, in an unknown place, surrounded by a silence that this time forces them to close their eyes to explore melodies and rhythms on which to return to create freedom towards a new and familiar search for happiness.

Alessandro, pianist and composer, draws melodies over which Andrea, drummer and producer, manages to develop rhythmic elements in perfect harmony.

That silence that was deafening before is transformed into an accumulation of cinematic atmospheres enriched by epic, empirical and exciting melodies, perfectly combined with pressing rhythms that travel fast.

They recently released their debut EP on Matador’s increasingly popular RUKUS, titled ‘Fallen‘. With ‘Hear Me Calling‘ about to drop on Sian’s revered Octopus imprint this Friday, we caught up with Gray Cosmo as they become the latest artists to join us for Inside Five:

Hey guys, thanks for joining us at MAP. Tell us about the story behind Gray Cosmo and your journey so far.

Our meeting took place only a short time ago, precisely in 2022, after two years of the pandemic, which negatively changed both of our lives. The day after we met, we already locked ourselves in the studio to work on our first track. We started our project without even telling us that we were starting it. After two years, we are still working with the same enthusiasm as on day one without realizing that two years have almost passed.

Your debut release, ‘Fallen’, is available now via Matador’s Rukus imprint. Was there any significant influence behind this release or anything you were trying to achieve with the first introduction of your sound?

We never work with a label in mind saying: “ok, let’s do something for…” We always just let the music flow. But when we finished those tracks, we thought Rukus could be a good home for them, so we asked our manager to send the tracks over to Matador, and luckily the release came out.

The techno space is a rapidly evolving environment. How do you see yourself adapting to this in the future?

Electronic music is constantly evolving, as well as technology, and the two worlds have never been so close. For us, keeping up with progress also means using more and more technological equipment in the studio & during live performances. And it also means working on creating audio-video projects that can satisfy progress while always remaining focused on the technological future.

Do you have any significant aspirations as a duo with your releases and performances?

Our main goal is to connect as many people as possible with our music and bring them into our cosmos.

Lastly, what can we expect from Gray Cosmo for the rest of 2023?

We are about to finish preparing our LIVE set with an amazing visual show, but we have always made music since day one, so be ready for our next releases. Making our Gray Cosmo always bigger is our first goal. There’s a place for everyone – join it!

Gray Cosmo’s ‘Hear Me Calling‘ is available to buy/stream via Octopus Recordings from 17th March 2023.
