An illegal rave at Lake Mezzano in Italy last week saw over 10,000 attendees, one death and even a birth – during an almost week-long ‘sesh’.
During six days, several events caused great concern for residents and authorities; four partygoers found themselves in hospital following excessive drink and drug use, with one man drowning – and sadly dying – after jumping in the lake and never re-emerging.
Local authorities are said to have already identified 1/5 of those in attendance. Some attendees have spoken of seeing dehydrated and starved animals, as well as reports of alcohol-induced comatose as a result of the rave. Local news sources have also reported that there was even a baby born during the rave.
Speaking about the rave, the mayor of Valentano, a nearby town, said:
“The area has been liberated, and there is no longer anyone at the site; I can only express satisfaction.”
Environmental agencies have already expressed concerns over the rave, that it has potentially caused irreparable damage to the local area.
Silvano Olmi, the regional president of Fare Verde, said:
“The illegal rave party active for days is causing serious damage to the environment and agriculture, there have been six stages erected, some mobile kitchens and thousands of campervans and caravans. What’s more, the loud music and massive presence of people and cars are disturbing the fauna and creating serious problems near the lake.”
You have to also consider the very real and current threat of COVID, and the fears that such a large and unmonitored event could contribute to the even more unwanted spread of the virus.
Alessio D’Amato, Lazio’s regional health councillor commenting on the rave:
“The situation is out of control, no negotiation is possible, public order must be restored, people identified and the responsibility for such a gathering must be established.”
Local authorities are said to have confiscated two vans containing sound equipment; they are yet to confirm what action – if any – will be taken against those identified at/behind the event.
