A Chat With: Phunkadelica

As far as creative fusion of sound and atristic creation goes, Italy’ Phunkadelica are a shining example of all things electronic. Referring to themselves as a “sparkling, multi-flavoured injection of waves, dimensions and grooves developed to increase intergalactic powers and abilities,” the duo are renowned for their elusive yet sturdy constructions on Diynamic, Correspondant, TAU and many more well-known digital imprints.

Ahead of their performance on Sicily’s east coast this weekend, we caught up with Phunkadelica as they prepare for this year’s star-studded One Day Music Festival:

We know that Sicily and One Day Music represent a deep bond for you as Sicilians; what does it feel like to perform on a stage like this, in the land that gave birth to you?

Actually, that’s the kind of stage which makes any artist anxious. For us, it’s a melting pot of emotions and feelings. Luca has been playing in Sicily for decades, so he’s more confident, but adrenaline still reaches the maximum level for both of us though. And anxiety too! ehehehhe

Your creed is certainly good music, demonstrated by the fact that you are very prolific artists but, above all, musically eclectic, diversifying your sound and making it usable in different situations while remaining recognizable from a musical point of view. What can you tell us about it, and where does this multifaceted research into sound originate?

Basically, it simply comes from the different backgrounds and attitudes we have. There are also many things we have in common, of course, but the mixture of a drummer and a DJ attitude, in our case, leads to the Phunkadelica’s sound. No rules, no roles, just feelings!

Another characteristic of your artistic profile is the possibility of performing both Live and DJ Set; how a Live Set is born, what distinguishes it from a DJ Set, and what setting do you give to your work in this sense?

Versatility; it’s what distinguishes the two kinds of performances without any doubt. Indeed Luca, who is the only DJ of the duo, can play different kinds of music with his DJ set based on several aspects – which can change time by time, showing his eclecticism and wide background in electronic dance music. On the other hand, the live set showcases our sound as we play just our music, delivering an immersion into our world of sounds and colours.

While thanking you for taking the time and waiting to see you performing on the Sundance Arena stage, we ask you for a special greeting and a few words for all those who will be there for you on 1st May?

Sadly, this year there will be only Luca to perform, but we suggest you don’t miss this year’s edition, because it will surely be one for the books – you’ll see!

Phunkadelica joins Âme, I Hate Models, Len Faki, Ilario Alicante, Nusha & many more on 1st May in Catania, Sicily, for ONE DAY MUSIC. For tickets & more information, visit: https://www.onedaymusic.it
